Investments in Engineering Research and Development (ER&D) remain critical for enterprises to address customer demand, enhance customer experience, and stay ahead of market trends. Although the COVID-19 outbreak negatively impacted industries such as automotive, aerospace & defense, and consumer electronics, ER&D continued to be a top priority for enterprises, with a focus on making low-risk and high-impact investments. In this research, we present a fact-based view of the global ER&D market, with a focus on the top 200 enterprises with the highest ER&D spend across eight industry verticals. Our study found that the global business spend on ER&D activities increased by 5.7% in 2019 to reach US$956.8 billion and the enterprises mentioned in this report accounted for 48.8% of this spend.

Our research covers the enterprises’ key investment areas, ER&D spend growth, ER&D spend intensity (ER&D spend as a percentage of revenue), and a timeline of recent ER&D partnerships and initiatives. We have also captured prominent themes driving growth in the ER&D space and studied investments in cybersecurity, AI-/ML-based applications, connected vehicles, autonomous and unmanned flight systems, 3nm chip technology, 5G, and exponential technologies in healthcare. Further, this report outlines the evolving enterprise ER&D priorities and projects the growth outlook for a post-pandemic world.
