As IoT systems become an indispensable part of our daily lives, it is vital to test these systems rigorously and stringently to ensure that they are secure, efficient, and function as intended. However, testing IoT systems is a complex exercise, with several Verification and Validation (V&V) activities required to ensure end-to-end system functionality. Moreover, as the popularity of IoT systems increases and new OEMs enter the market, the number of permutations and combinations that need to be tested increases further.
Further, enterprises today realize that ineffective V&V of IoT products and systems can have a severe impact on their brand image as well as business operations. This has led to the need for a framework-led approach to V&V of IoT systems.
This viewpoint describes the challenges that enterprises face in testing their IoT systems and the various activities that an end-to-end V&V framework should encompass. In addition, we detail the significance of these activities for different kinds of IoT systems. We also recommend technology enablers that can enhance the framework’s effectiveness and offer a snapshot of emerging techniques that will shape the future of IoT testing.
