While RPA platforms were traditionally built for on-premise deployments as a majority of automations involved desktop-based applications, deployments on the cloud also grew as cloud-based business applications gained traction. With the outbreak of COVID-19, it became even more important for enterprises to migrate their workloads to the cloud to ensure business continuity and support a remote-working environment.

Enterprises have adopted various approaches toward cloud-based modernization, including the lift and shift of existing applications to the cloud without refactoring of the code or changes to the architecture. However, it has become evident that applications do require architectural changes to help enterprises reap sustained benefits. In this viewpoint, we examine a cloud-native application architecture’s benefits and the importance of cloud-native architecture for RPA.
